Phishers Hijack Search Engine Results

Technology

You knew it had to happen. The scammers and criminals who are behind the phishing schemes that you get in your email could never be satisfied with only fooling you into clicking on that link in your email.

Now they want to use your favorite legitimate sites against you. That’s right friends, Google and Yahoo may no longer be your friends.

According to a C|Net News article on Wednesday some phishers are creating sites that appear to be legitimate e-commerce sites and waiting for the hits to roll in, not from electronic mail, but from search engines. That’s right, search engines.

Once the hapless web surfer finds the perfect widget site for all of their Christmas widget needs they’ll find that they need to download something, such as pictures of the widgets. Unfortunately for our normally careful friend, that download actually installs a trojan horse program that can steal information like usernames and passwords.

Now, more than ever, it’s important that you have something like Spoofstick installed and in use, anti-virus software installed and fully updated, and a note pasted to your monitor reminding you that if something seems too good to be true, then it probably is.
