GOP’s Schmidt Wins Ohio Special Election
CINCINNATI — Republican Jean Schmidt has narrowly defeated Iraq war veteran Paul Hackett to win a special congressional election in Ohio.
The important thing about this story is that the 2nd District of Ohio hasn’t sent a Democrat to Washington for 40 years. This time they had a chance because they ran a veteran who is against gun control. Still, when it came down to it, the people of Ohio – 2 didn’t go for the guy who ran as an Iraq War veteran*.
That war experience, contrary to what you read later in this NY Times story, was not leading “on the battlefield” as Max Cleland put it but as the commander of a Civil Affairs (or Public Relations) unit.
