Outrageous

We live in a time in which a lot of couples get divorced. It’s not a good thing that more people don’t take their marriage vows more seriously than they do. It’s really unfortunate when there are children involved.

We also live in a time in which fathers don’t enjoy as many rights as mothers. This was made evident by some events which recently transpired in New Mexico.

According to the Associated Press, Steve Barreras had been hauled into court, threatened, had money demanded of him for a child he denied fathering five years ago and suffered having his wages garnisheed to the tune of $20,000 for its support, only this child was never seen in court. His ex-wife was finally ordered to produce the child in court.

So last week, Viola Trevino picked up a 2-year-old girl and her grandmother off the street, promised them a trip to see Santa Claus and $50 and took the girl to court, alleging it was her daughter. And this was after falsifying a birth certificate, social security and medicare cards, and not one, but two DNA tests.

Now the system may be stacked against fathers, but no judge is that stupid. And so, tonight Viola Trevino is spending time as a guest of the local jail and the judge has signed findings which declare among other things “There is no child.”

There can be no better proof that things are stacked against men when the child does not even have to exist in order to force someone to pay $20,000 to the “mother.” And Mr. Barreras’ recourse? He can sue his ex-wife and her accomplices to get the lost money back. But will there be any for him to recover?

I doubt it.
