Surf softly and carry a spoofstick
Phishing is a big problem. This month’s Reader’s Digest includes an article with the clever title “Phishing: Don’t Take the Bait”. And their discussion forum has a small thread where a small number of people have opened up enough to admit falling for the connivings of phishers.
Part of the problem is that phishers obfuscate their URLs. That is, they make it look like you’re going one place when you’re really going to another. So, when you’re looking at that email and you see that the URL starts with “http://www.mybank.com” you really could get taken to http://www.fraudsite.com when you click on it.
Wouldn’t it, as the song goes, be lovely if you could just look up and make certain that you’re at mybank.com and not fraudsite.com?
Well, my friends, you can! Introducing Spoofstick by Core Street. Available for both Firefox and Internet Explorer, Spoofstick does make for a smaller viewing space for browsing, but gives you this in return:

Now, isn’t that special? If you’re generally safe in your browsing practices (you don’t do things like click on links found in spam) then you probably don’t have much to worry about, but isn’t the extra piece of mind worth it?
I’m…, well, I’m me, and I endorse this product and/or service.
It’s that good.
