Meathead Speaks

National Politics Comments (0)

With nothing better to do for a bit today around lunch, I turned on Fox News. Day Side with Linda Vester was on and she was interviewing Rob Reiner (aka “Meathead” from All In the Family). Her last question was a two parter:

  1. What do you think of this network (Fox News Channel), and
  2. Is there a liberal bias to the mainstream media?

And Mr. Reiner spoke his opinion. That opinion:

  1. I think that Fox News is incredibly biased toward Republicans and Conservatives and against Democrats and Progressives.
  2. There is no liberal bias to the media; that’s just a canard put out there by Republicans and Conservatives.

I’ll give him points for being truthful regarding what his opinion is, but after talking about the responsibility that celebrities have to “draw attention to an issue” only after thoroughly studying it, you would think that he might have been a shade more, I dunno, judicious in his speech. After all, the New York Times admits it has a liberal bias. Not long ago, the assistant managing editor of Newsweek admitted that

“There’s one other base here: the media. Let’s talk a little media bias here. The media, I think, wants Kerry to win. And I think they’re going to portray Kerry and Edwards — I’m talking about the establishment media, not Fox, but — they’re going to portray Kerry and Edwards as being young and dynamic and optimistic and all, there’s going to be this glow about them that some, is going to be worth, collectively, the two of them, that’s going to be worth maybe 15 points.”

So, who should we believe? Rob Reiner talking about the media or the media talking about themselves?
